Carol Channing

Channing’s maternal grandfather had been a Nordic German, and her maternal grandmother had been an African American. Channing is a world renowned signer and actress. She began her career in New York City in a show off Broadway. Soon she moved up to Broadway shows which assisted in her acting and signing career. Some of her most famous pieces include “Hello Dolly”, “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and “Alice in Wonderland” in 1984. Channing has won 3 Tony Awards as well as a lifetime achievement award in 1995. She also has been nominated for the Golden Globe and Academy Awards.

Larry King

larry king and diabetesLawrence Harvey Zeiger’s home town was Brooklyn, New York. He was born in 1933 and has had a fantastically active career. King’s first job in at a radio station was a bit of a snore. He was hired to perform small tasks as well as cleaning. This paid off as one of the regular hosts quit and King was put on the air in 1957 in Miami. With the death of his father at a young age, he never went to college. Even though, King had a run in with the law landing him in jail, he straightened his life out. Eventually, in 1985 he obtained his own TV talk show and has been on the air ever since.

Shortly after King began his TV program, he suffered a massive heart attack. This led to other medical problems as well. He had to undergo a quintuple bypass heart surgery. Before this life changing event, he was a heavy smoker. King would light up while interviewing his guests. Since his heart attack, he is a spokesman to halt smoking to prevent cardiovascular disease. King’s life-altering event was when he learned that he had diabetes. Since then, King has invited other celebrities to talk about diabetes on his daily show, an important part of CNN’s prime time line-up.

Della Reese

della reese and diabetesDella Reese Patricia Early entered the world in 1931 from Detroit, Michigan. Reese is known for her jazz signing as well as her acting abilities. She began her career in entertainment by singing in Detroit. Later, after 20 performances on the Ed Sullivan Show, she began to get some TV roles. Her songs include “Time After Time”, “And That Reminds Me”, and “Don’t You Know”. Reese’s TV appearances included first African American women to guest host “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson”, “The Royal Family”, as well as her most famous TV show “Touched by an Angle”. Reese is still going strong at 77 years old.

Reese has had a few near miss deaths in her lifetime. She accidentally walked through a glass window and nearly bled to death. Reese needed over one thousand stitches. A brain aneurysm almost took her life when she was filming an episode of “The Tonight Show”. While on set of one of the “Touched by an Angel” episodes she became ill. Reese then learned that she had type 2 diabetes. She was invited to the Larry King show and there is when the public found out about her struggle with diabetes. Reese is an active and vital spokeswoman for the American Diabetes Association.

Nick Jonas

Nick Jonas was born in 1992 from Wyckoff, New Jersey. He is the lead signer as well as plays guitar in the band him and his bothers started together, Jonas Brothers. Jonas began his career at the early age of 6. He was directed to an agent after been seen singing in a barber shop. Jonas’s career did not only entail signing, he acted on Broadway in a variety of plays. These include “A Christmas Carol”, “The Sound of Music” and “Les Miserables”. As his career moved forward, he began writing Christian music and received a record contract. He is 16.

In 2005, a young Nick Jonas got some startling news. He learned that he had type 1 diabetes. He got that diagnosis while on tour with the Jonas Brothers. The band was playing at a Diabetes Research Institute’s carnival when he made the shocking announcement that he does in fact have type 1 diabetes. Later he put out this statement: “I want to let kids know that it doesn’t have to be so hard. The most important thing is to never ever let yourself get down about having diabetes.”

Mary Tyler Moore

mary tyler moore and diabetesMary Tyler Moore has been an icon in the television world as well as a spokeswoman for diabetes. She was born in 1936, a native of Brooklyn, New York. Moore is most famous for her roles in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” as well as “The Dick Van Dyke Show”. She began her career at the tender age of 17. Moore got her start on television commercials that were played during the most popular sitcoms at the time. She has been in film as well as stage performances. Through her career, she has been honored with a statute and awards. She is still making appearances in TV and movies.

Moore, who has type 1 diabetes, spoke before a Congressional committee, on behalf of all diabetics. On June 24, 2003, she gave this testimony:”For most of you, blood sugar balance is as automatic as breathing. But for people with juvenile diabetes, like me, it requires vigilance 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year.” She has done commercials and assists in opening peoples eye to the dangerous that diabetes can cause. While Moore is fighting for a cure for the diabetes disease, she has almost completely lost her sight as well as one of her limbs.

Bret Michaels

His first band was called Paris which later became Poison. It was a hard rock sensation that lasted through the 80s. Some of there songs include “Nothin’ but a Good Time”, “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” and “Your Mama Don’t Dance”. Michaels has a reality TV show called, “Rock of Love”. He also has ventured into movie productions and began his own company.

Michaels was only 6 years old when the doctors told him that he had diabetes. He had to stay in the hospital for two months, while the doctors tried to determine his blood sugar levels. He has been shown in “Behind the Music” and other specials using a syringe. This led many people to believe he was a drug abuser. However, he was using his insulin.

Jackie Robinson

Jackie Robinson  was born Jack Roosevelt Robinson in 1919. He is a native of Cairo, Georgia. Robinson is one of the most famous baseball players to date. In 1947, he became the first major league African-American star. His career was the start of the end of baseball segregation. Robinson has won many awards including the first “Rookie of the Year”, “National League MVP” as well as the “Presidential Medal of Freedom”. Not only did he portray freedom in American sports, he also spoke out in the civil rights movement. Robinson supported Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962 and his player number 42 was retired in 1997. Jackie Robinson was an icon in American history. He died in 1972 of heart disease a well as complications to diabetes. Robinson was 53 years old.

Robinson suffered from diabetes and heart problems through his later life. He was almost completely blind because of the diabetes. Robinson, who had to deal with more than his health issues in his life, died at an early age because of his illnesses.

Howard Hughes

Howard Hughesis an American Icon. He was born in 1905 from Huston, Texas. Various books and stories have been written of the famous Hughes. He was an aviator, producer, director and still to this day, one of the wealthiest people in the world. Hughes is credited for building aircrafts, racers and increasing in productivity of Trans World Airlines. He has been in the spot light for over 80 years and he is still being talked about. Hughes has had several controversial issues in his life. However, most spoken and written words were assumed just to be rumors. In 1952, Hughes used his increasing wealth to create the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Howard Hughes died in 1976 of kidney failure. He was 71 years old.

Throughout Hughes life he has had several medical problems. As a child, he developed a social anxiety disorder which made certain situations unbearable. He has also had various instances where the OCD disorder controlled his life. Hughes fell into a mental state of withdrawal. He was hardly seen and would lock himself up in his home for days at a time. While much has been written about Howard Hughes compulsive disorder, Hughes’ diabetes has received much less attention. A review of his life presents no evidence of a need to slow down, due to problems with diabetes.

David Crosby

David CrosbyDavid Crosby is a legend in the music industry. He was born in 1941, native of Los Angeles, California. Crosby was one of the founding members of the rock groups The Byrds as well as Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. His first interest was not music, rather it was acting. After a while, he put aside that idea and began his music career. Crosby will always be remembered for his songwriting, singing and guitar playing. Some of his most famous works include “Eight Miles High”, “Music is Love” and “Where Will I Be”. Crosby was introduced into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as well. David Crosby is 67 years old.

Crosby has had some medical problems in his life. He is insulin dependant with type 1 diabetes. Crosby has also undergone a liver transplant in the 90s. This is because his liver was damaged due to over use of drugs and alcohol in his past.

Elliot Yamin

elliot yamin and diabetesEfraym Elliot Yamin entered the world in 1978. He is a native of Los Angeles, California. Yamin is from Jewish and Israeli descent. His musical career started out at an early age. Yamin was first discovered signing karaoke when he was a teenage. He has had several big breaks including a single titled, “Wait for You”. Most people may recognize him from “American Idol”, where he placed 3rd on the fifth season. Since being on “American Idol”, he has preformed on various talk shows as well as several other performances that has launched his musical talent to higher levels. Elliot Yamin is now 30 years old and in the height of his career.

At the age of 16, he learned that he had type 1 diabetes. He publicly described his reaction to that diagnosis: “I didn’t understand how I could go from being a normal kid to overnight, having this lifelong disease that was incurable.” Yamin got over his initial shock, and he went on to make a recording with Hickory Records.
