Kelli Kuehne is a famous golfer diagnosed with diabetes. She was born in 1977 from Dallas, Texas. The Kuehne family is full of famous golfers as well. Her two bothers activity plays the sport and wins tournaments. Kuehne has been a part of several championship matches including United States Girl’s Junior Amateur, United States Women’s Amateur and the British Ladies Amateur. She has won all three titles. Joe Gibbs
Joe Gibbs, the famous coach and mentor, guided his Washington Redskins to the Super Bowl in 1982, 1987 as well as 1991. This impressive record did not stop there. Johnny Cash
Johnny Cash is a household name. Even if the music genre was not a person’s style, they would still enjoy Johnny Cash. He was a legend in his own time. Cash was born in 1932 and originally from Kingsland, Arkansas. He was famous for his black suit attire. Even though, Cash has had trouble with the law many years during his life and landed in prison. He still sung songs of hope. This brought joy to many people. Some of his more inspired works include “I Walk the Line”, “Ring of Fire” and “A Boy Named Sue”. He died in 2003 from complications of diabetes. Cash was 71 years old.

Around 1997, Cash began experiencing health problems. He was having issues with autonomic neuropathy. This was a complication related to his diabetes. He was in and out of hospitals; this made Cash stop touring and focus on his family. His loving wife died a few months before he did. She made Cash promise to continue recording all the way to the end. Complications from diabetes have shortened the life of a number of celebrities. If Johnny Cash had not had diabetes, music lovers might have enjoyed his deep voice for a while longer.

Morgan Freeman

Marlon Brando
Marlon Brando is one of the most renowned actors of all times. He was born in 1924 and native to Omaha, Nebraska. Brando had a turmoil childhood where he was in and out of different school. He excelled in theater and enjoyed performing. The young man has had several menial jobs and only a little family support before he became a star. Brando is famous for his work in “A Street Car Named Desire”, “Guys and Dolls”, and of course the most famous of them all, “The Godfather”. He has won several awards including an Academy Award and an Oscar. Sadly, Brando died in 2004 from pulmonary fibrosis. He was 80 years old.

Towards the end of Brando’s life, he had several health problems. His obesity may have led up to some of his health concerns. Brando had respiratory failure as well as heart failure. It was known after his death than Brando was suffering from deteriorating eyesight due to diabetes. It was also rumored that Brando was diagnosed with senile dementia.

Billie Jean King
Billie Jean King, formally Billie Jean Moffitt, is an American icon. She was born in 1943, native of California. She has had a successful career. King has won several titles including singles, doubles and mixed doubles. She also won the U.S Open on all four different surfaces—grass, clay, carpet and hard. However, King may be best remembered as the lady that defeated Bobby Riggs in the “Battle of the Sexes”. Riggs was one of the leading male talents in the 30s and 40s in tennis. Not only is King admired for her tennis skills, she is also an advocate in women’s rights from sports as well as in society. King was also famous for being the first athlete to admit she has had a lesbian relationship. She is 64 years old.

King was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. She has founded several originations. The Donnelly Award is a scholarship designed for tennis players that have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Overall, King has founded 9 originations. She is also a spokesman that offers support and advice for individuals dealing with diabetes and what they can accomplish with this disease.

Arthur Ashe
Arthur Ashe was the first African American to become a member of the U.S Davis Cup team. Ashe entered the world in 1943, native from Richmond, Virginia. He has had a successful career in the tennis field. Ashe began his journey at a young age. He left for Saint Louis because of the segregation of tennis in Richmond. Ache was portrayed in Sports Illustrated. He also won the U.S. Open in 1968 and 1975. In 1985 he was elected to the Tennis Hall of Fame. His life was not always about tennis, he was arrested twice for protesting for civil rights. Ache died in 1993 from complications of AIDS. He was 50 years old.

Ashe gave the tennis world another look at the views of a diabetic. He was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and still went on with his tennis career. The first major health issue came in the 70s when he experienced a heart attack. Ashe, the active tennis professional, had to receive quadruple bypass surgery. In the 80s, he obtained HIV during a blood transfusion that occurred during a surgery procedure.

Carol Channing
Carol Channing was bone in 1921, native from Seattle, Washington. Carol Channing was a diabetic who hid from the world her mixed heritage. Channing’s maternal grandfather had been a Nordic German, and her maternal grandmother had been an African American. Channing is a world renowned signer and actress. She began her career in New York City in a show off Broadway. Soon she moved up to Broadway shows which assisted in her acting and signing career. Some of her most famous pieces include “Hello Dolly”, “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and “Alice in Wonderland” in 1984. Channing has won 3 Tony Awards as well as a lifetime achievement award in 1995. She also has been nominated for the Golden Globe and Academy Awards. Channing is an impressive 87 years old.

Della Reese
Delloreese Patricia Early entered the world in 1931 from Detroit, Michigan. Reese is known for her jazz signing as well as her acting abilities. Bret Michael Sychak entered the world in 1963, native to Butler, Pennsylvania. Michaels’s career has been going strong since the 80s. His first band was called Paris which later became Poison. It was a hard rock sensation that lasted through the 80s. Some of there songs include “Nothin’ but a Good Time”, “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” and “Your Mama Don’t Dance”. Michaels has a reality TV show called, “Rock of Love”. He also has ventured into movie productions and began his own company. Bret Michaels is 45 years old.

Michaels was only 6 years old when the doctors told him that he had diabetes. He had to stay in the hospital for two months, while the doctors tried to determine his blood sugar levels. He has been shown in “Behind the Music” and other specials using a syringe. This led many people to believe he was a drug abuser. However, he was using his insulin.

David Wells
David Wells was born in 1963 from Torrance, California. He is famous for his pitching skills. Wells has been a successful pitcher for several teams beginning with Toronto Blue Jays in 1987 and his latest team is the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2007. With the nickname Boomer, he has been dubbed the best left-handed pitcher in baseball. On March 17, 1998 Wells had earned public recognition. He was the 15th pitcher in the history of the MLB to pitch a perfect game. David Wells is 45 years old.

Wells was lucky enough to enjoy a childhood that did not include tests of his blood sugar level. In the spring of 2007, David Wells made a public announcement, letting everyone know that he has Type II diabetes. Wells was determined to take the necessary lifestyle changes in order to try and beat the disease.

Esther Rolle
Ester Rolle was born in 1920, native of Pompano Beach, California. Through her life she was a star. Her career choices took her to stage, film as well as TV rolls. Rolle’s stage appearances include “Don’t Play Us Cheap”. Her movie career had hits like, “Train Ride”. However, Rolle’s most memorable performance was in the 70s TV show, “Good Times”. Ester Rolle died in 1998 of complications from diabetes. She was 78 years old.

Efraym Elliot Yamin entered the world in 1978. He is a native of Los Angeles, California. Yamin is from Jewish and Israeli descent. His musical career started out at an early age. Yamin was first discovered signing karaoke when he was a teenage. He has had several big breaks including a single titled, “Wait for You”. Most people may recognize him from “American Idol”, where he placed 3rd on the fifth season. Since being on “American Idol”, he has preformed on various talk shows as well as several other performances that has launched his musical talent to higher levels. Elliot Yamin is now 30 years old and in the height of his career.

At the age of 16, he learned that he had type 1 diabetes. He publicly described his reaction to that diagnosis: “I didn’t understand how I could go from being a normal kid to overnight, having this lifelong disease that was incurable.” Yamin got over his initial shock, and he went on to make a recording with Hickory Records.

B.B. King
Riley B. King entered the world in 1925. He is a native of Itta Bena, Mississippi. King began his career in the 40s where he went to Tennessee to become a star. Unfortunately, he did not make it at that time. King went back home to prepare himself better. Two years later, he returned for the break he was looking for. King began as a singer at a radio station, soon after he had his first recording contract. He is dubbed one of the best guitarist of all time. Some of his recordings include “Stand By Me”, “Woke Up This Morning” and “You Upset Me Baby”. King has had several television appearances and over 15,000 musical performances. B.B. King is 83 years old.

King has been living with type 2 diabetes for over 20 years. He is an avid spokesman for the disease. King was worried about the need to prick his fingers in order to test his blood glucose level. After he discovered the One Touch Ultra System, he agreed to be a voice for One Touch. King has also endorsed other products that allow individuals to take care of their diabetes successfully.

Catfish Hunter
James Augustus Hunter is a native from New Orleans, born in 1946. Later, he became known as the Catfish Hunter. He played both football and baseball while in high school. During his senior year, he had a hunting accident and lost one toe. This accident worried the would be baseball star. Catfish Hunter felt that he could not have a successful career. However, he became one of the leading sports stars of his time. Still, he went on to pitch for an MLB team. On May 22, 1968, Hunter pitched a perfect game. He began his career with the Kansas City A’s in 1965 and it ended in 1979 with the New York Yankees. Catfish Hunter died in 1999 from Lou Gehrig’s Disease. He was 53 years old.

The Lou Gehrig’s Disease was diagnosed one year before he died. In the last few years of Catfish Hunter’s life, he could barely throw a baseball. He was unconscious for a time when he hit his head on a step. Catfish Hunter was released from the hospital in good condition. Along with the Lou Gehrig’s Disease, he was also diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. This left him taking insulin injects 3 times a day.

David Crosby
David Crosby is a legend in the music industry. He was born in 1941, native of Los Angeles, California. Crosby was one of the founding members of the rock groups The Byrds as well as Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. His first interest was not music, rather it was acting. After a while, he put aside that idea and began his music career. Crosby will always be remembered for his songwriting, singing and guitar playing. Some of his most famous works include “Eight Miles High”, “Music is Love” and “Where Will I Be”. Crosby was introduced into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as well. David Crosby is 67 years old.

He has worked with Patrick Swayze, Dennis Quaid and Brad Pitt. Meat Loaf’s songs include “Paradise by the Dashboard Light”, “Bat out of Hell” and “I’d Do Anything for Love (but I Won’t Do That)”. His stage presences include “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”, “Fight Club” and “Spice World”. Even though, his life has been rocky, Meat Loaf is a musical legend. He is 61 years old.

Meat Loaf has been diagnosed with diabetes for several years. He has been ill at a few of his concerts where he was forced to go on despite the way he felt. Meat Loaf has had other medical issues as well. He has been in a near fatal car accident, a shot put has hit him directly in the head and has been ill with Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome.

Minnie Pearl
Minnie Pearl was enjoyed by millions for her performance from the Grand Ole Opry and the hit TV show, Hee Haw. Pearl was born Sarah Ophelia Colley in 1912. She is a native of Centerville, Tennessee. In that day, age and part of the country, her family was embarrassed that she chose a career as a comedian in show business. Pearl started out producing as well as directing plays in her small community. She was a comedic legend with a stage presence that could never be copied. Pearl took her audience to new levels and they enjoyed turning in to her where ever she was. Sadly, Minnie Pearl died in 1996 of a stroke. She was 84 years old.

Jerry Mathers is a TV and stage icon. He was born in 1948 and a native of Sioux City, Iowa. Mathers is best known for his portrayal of a young 1950s suburban boy. Everyone remembers the lovable yet mischievous Beaver Cleaver. Mathers began his acting career when he was just two years old. In his long list of achievements, he was the first actor to receive a percentage of product revenue from a television show. Mathers also had a short musical career where he recorded some songs with this band called Beaver and the Trappers. Jerry Mathers is 60 years old.

Mathers learned in 1996 that he had diabetes. He then lost 45 pounds, and began to lecture about living with diabetes. Mathers understood the importance of the disease and wished to share his knowledge with others faced with diabetes. He became a spokesman for the Johnson and Johnson Company. They design glucose testing meters.

Mick Fleetwood
Mick Fleetwood was born Michael John Kells Fleetwood in 1947. He is a native of Redruth, Cornwall, United Kingdom. Fleetwood was one of the founding members of the band Fleetwood Mac. He had a rough childhood which led him to drop out of school at the young age of 15. Fleetwood decided then that he would go to London to become a drummer. His career had several levels, including various bands and small TV and film rolls. He will always be remembered for his Fleetwood Mac performances. In November of 2002, Fleetwood became a U.S. citizen. Mick Fleetwood is 61 years old.

Fleetwood has had several bouts of hypoglycemia while drumming for Fleetwood Mac. In 1979, doctors told him that he had diabetes. When Fleetwood was diagnosed, he did not know what was happening. Finally he received the news that he had a mild case of diabetes. With diet and exercise he was able to keep it under control.

Tommy Lee
Tommy Lee was born Tommy Lee Bass in 1962. He is a native of Athens, Greece. However, shortly after he was born the family moved to California. Lee’s father is of Welsh American and his mother is of Greek descent. Lee is most famous for being the drummer of the 80’s heavy metal band Mötley Crüe. He has been married to Pamela Anderson as well as Heather Locklear. Lee has been in trouble with the law on a few occasions and is considered a bad boy or the heavy metal industry. In addition to Mötley Crüe, Lee has formed other bands as well. The one that lee is presently with is called Electro Mayhem. Tommy Lee is 46 years old.

Jackie Robinson
Jackie Robinson was born Jack Roosevelt Robinson in 1919. He is a native of Cairo, Georgia. Robinson is one of the most famous baseball players to date. Not only did he portray freedom in American sports, he also spoke out in the civil rights movement. Robinson supported Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962 and his player number 42 was retired in 1997. Jackie Robinson was an icon in American history. He died in 1972 of heart disease a well as complications to diabetes. Robinson was 53 years old.

Robinson suffered from diabetes and heart problems through his later life. He was almost completely blind because of the diabetes. Robinson, who had to deal with more than his health issues in his life, died at an early age because of his illnesses.

Howard Hughes
Howard Hughes is an American Icon. He was born in 1905 from Huston, Texas. Various books and stories have been written of the famous Hughes. He was an aviator, producer, director and still to this day, one of the wealthiest people in the world. Hughes is credited for building aircrafts, racers and increasing in productivity of Trans World Airlines. He has been in the spot light for over 80 years and he is still being talked about. Hughes has had several controversial issues in his life. However, most spoken and written words were assumed just to be rumors. In 1952, Hughes used his increasing wealth to create the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Howard Hughes died in 1976 of kidney failure. He was 71 years old.

Throughout Hughes life he has had several medical problems. As a child, he developed a social anxiety disorder which made certain situations unbearable. He has also had various instances where the OCD disorder controlled his life. Hughes fell into a mental state of withdrawal. He was hardly seen and would lock himself up in his home for days at a time. While much has been written about Howard Hughes compulsive disorder, Hughes’ diabetes has received much less attention. A review of his life presents no evidence of a need to slow down, due to problems with diabetes.

Ernest Hemingway
Ernest Hemingway is one of the most famous American writers of the 1900s. He was born in 1899 from Oak Park, Illinois. During his life he has had several ups and downs. Hemingway is renowned for his works including “For Whom the Bell Tolls”, “The Old Man and the Sea” and “Men Without Women”. He has received the Noble Prize in Literature as well as the Pulitzer Prize. Hemingway has been a journalist, worked with commentaries and a national icon. With increasing stability problems, Ernest Hemingway took his own life in 1961. He was 62 years old.

Hemingway’s father had the same fate. He was distressed from diabetes and financial problems. Clarence Hemingway took his own life in 1928. This disturbed Hemingway fiercely. He became withdrawn and rather depressed. Several members of Hemingway’s family committed suicide through the years as well. Hemingway himself became a diabetic, struggling with the disease as he wrote in Europe, the U.S. and the islands of the Caribbean.

Adam Morrison
Adam Morrison is a professional basketball player for the Charlotte Bobcats. He was born in 1984 from Glendive, Montana. His career is still going strong. Morrison has won and been a finalist in several awards. He was a finalist in the Naismith and Wooden Awards. Morison was co-player of the year and won the Chevrolet Player of the Year award, in 2006. He is an outstanding basketball player that has achieved various records and awards for his performance. Adam Morrison is currently playing for the Charlotte Bobcats. He is 24 years old.

Morrison knew nothing about diabetes when he attended a basketball camp in eighth grade. While at that camp, Morrison got very sick, and he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Since then, he has been managing his diabetes through healthy eating habits as well as an insulin pump. This is attached to his body to give insulin when needed. Sports Illustrated did a spread on Morrison’s diabetic problems. Since that has been published, several parents and children have asked that Morrison speaks to them about the disease. Fiorello LaGuardia was born in 1882, a native from New York, New York. Many people may not recognize the name. Nevertheless, he was the Mayor of New York City during the depression era for 3 consecutive terms from 1934 to 1945. He increased the number of welfare agencies in the city. LaGuardia pushed for an airport in New York City. Many individuals may recognize the last name of LaGuardia from the international airport in New York City. LaGuardia has an impressive history of being in the political spotlight. He has been a Representative, Deputy Attorney General and Congressman. He also served in the air force during World War 1. Fiorello LaGuardia died in 1947 of pancreatic cancer. He was 65 years old.

Jack Benny
Jack Benny was born Benjamin Kubelsky in 1894. He was a native of Chicago, Illinois. Benny was a successful comedian, TV, stage and radio actor. He became a nation icon with a radio program called the Jack Benny show. Benny was a character actor. He was famous for his personality and the method in which he represented himself. Benny had various variety shows that situated sketched comedy. He invited many guests to his shows including Jimmy Stewart, George Burns and Orson Wells. His performances are still talked about to this day. Benny was a genius comedian and is missed by his friends and fans alike. Jack Benny died in 1974 of pancreatic cancer. He was 80 years old.

Benny had juvenile diabetes. He lived with this disease for his whole life. Benny never used his public voice to speak-out about diabetes.

Jackie Gleason
Jackie Gleason was born as Herbert John Gleason in 1916. He was a native of Brooklyn, New York. Gleason is one of the most popular comedians in American history. Not only did he perform the comedic route, he was also known for dramatic roles as well. Most people know Gleason for his role as Ralph Kramden on the hit TV show “The Honeymooners”. His earlier life was troublesome, his father left and his mother died when he was only 19 years old. Gleason began his career on Broadway. “The Jackie Gleason Show” was an hour long variety program in the 50s. This became the second highest rated television show in the United States. Gleason was also a musician playing jazz. He has received an Academy Award for his dramatic performances. Jackie Gleason, an American icon, died in 1987 from liver and colon cancer. He was 71 years old.

Gleason was another comedian with diabetes. Gleason developed type 2 diabetes. While he did not make a direct reference to his diabetes while on-stage, he did become associated with an interesting statement. During almost every appearance, Gleason would say, “How sweet it is.”

Mikhail Gorbachev
Mikhail Gorbachev is one of the most famous Russian leaders of all times. He was born in 1931, a native of Privol’noe, Stavropol region, Russia. Gorbachev worked closely with President Ronald Reagan to bring the cold war to an end. He was the leader of Soviet Union from 1985 until its end in 1991. In 1990, he called for the withdrawal of all Soviet troops from Europe in 1990. Gorbachev was awarded the Noble Peace Prize for his work in bring the Cold war to an end. At present, Gorbachev is the leader of the Union of Social-Democrats. Mikhail Gorbachev is 77 years old.

During his life he has had some fantastic achievements. Gorbachev has another success story as well. He was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, but it has not slowed him down. He manages his diabetes with the correct diet and exercise regiment in addition to medication.

Miles Davis
Miles Davis is perhaps the most significant musician to date. Davis was born in 1926 from Alton, Illinois. He was best known for his jazz techniques and songwriting abilities. Davis was recording and performing literally all of his life. He began in 1945, recording with blues singer Rubberleg Williams. Davis has played and preformed with all of the greats in blues and jazz history. The instrument of choice was the trumpet; however he played others as well. Throughout musical history, various sounds from the 60s and on were influenced by the styles of Miles Davis. He has won various awards including “Grammy Awards”, “Down Beat reader’s poll” and “Sonning Award”. Davis was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. He was inducted into the Hollywood’s Rockwalk in 2006. Davis achieved a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 1998. He is truly a master of his industry. Miles Davis died in 1991 from a pneumonia which turned into respiratory failure and stroke. He was 65 years old.

The jazz trumpeter had taken some rather unusual steps while trying to control his diabetes. At one point, Davis went to a rejuvenation clinic in Switzerland, where he got a shot of lamb serum.

Patti LaBelle
Patti LaBelle was born Patricia Louise Holt in 1944. She is a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is best known for her songwriting and R&B performances. LaBelle has been the founder of two musical groups, Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles and Labelle. She has had such hit songs as “Take Me for a Little While”, “Lady Marmalade” and “Where Love Begins”. LaBelle is mostly known for her unique singing styles but she has been in various films and talk show appearances. Patti LaBelle, at the age of 64, is still going strong in the music industry.

LaBelle has been struggling with diabetes since 1995. She passed out on stage in 1990. Later a physician spoke with her and asked, “Did you know that you were a diabetic?” Since she has been diagnosed with diabetes, LaBelle has been a spokeswoman for the American Diabetes Association. Her work with this disease did not stop there. She has written two cookbooks for the diabetic community as well as participated in advertisements for the One-Touch Ultra blood sugar tester machines.

Raymond Kroc
Raymond Kroc was born in 1902 from Chicago, Illinois. Kroc never finished high school, he drove an ambulance during World War 1 and he played jazz after the war. However, most individual may remember Kroc as the man that bought the first MacDonald’s restaurant. Kroc being a successful businessman approached the McDonald’s brothers with an offer they could not refuse. The brothers agreed to sell the name and the business to Kroc as long as he kept of the quality that they had worked hard to produce. In 1955, the first McDonald’s chain began in Illinois. Raymond Kroc died in 1984, a few days before his franchise sold its 50th billion hamburger.

Kroc launched the Kroc Foundation in 1969 to assist in research for diabetes, arthritis and multiple sclerosis. The Ronald McDonald house was created for families of children to have a place to stay during hospital visits. Kroc stood for families, community and a helping hand. He felt that the community should be thanked for their support.

Sugar Ray Robinson
Sugar Ray Robinson was born Walker Smith Jr. in 1921, a native of Ailey, Georgia. He was dubbed by many as the greatest boxer of all times. Robinson started his career in 1940. He has preformed in several divisions including Lightweight, Welterweight, Middleweight as well as Light Heavyweight. He has fought some of the greatest boxers in American history such as Henry Armstrong, Tommy Bell and Gene Fullmer. In his career he has won countless matches and awards. Robinson retired in 1965 and was inducted to the International Boxing Hall of Fame 2 years later. Sugar Ray Robinson died in 1989 from Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes. He was 68 years old.

Robinson was diagnosed with diabetes later in his life. He was treated with insulin injections. Complications from diabetes interrupted his life. Robinson’s blood pressure spiked on the night before his mother’s death, and so he was unable to attend her funeral.

Sylvia Chase
Sylvia Chase was born in 1938 and is a native of Northfield, Minnesota. Chase, a diabetic and a journalist was once an unknown radio producer in Los Angeles. She later became a familiar name on 20/20. Chase won both an Emmy and a Peabody award. She has also won the ATAS Broadcast Journalism Award. Sylvia Chase is 70 years old.

Thomas Edison
Thomas Edison was one of the most famous inventors in American history. He was born in 1847, a native of Milan, Ohio. Edison was credited with 1300 patented inventions, including the phonograph, the incandescent light bulb and the motion picture camera. Edison was only in school for 3 months. His mother took him out and home schooled him the remainder of his years. Edison believed that mass-production was the best method to make profit for his inventions. By 1887, 121 Edison power stations delivered electricity to homes and businesses. He launched propaganda to the people that AC was dangerous to use and the DC that he produced was the more practical way to go. Thomas Edison died in 1931. He was 84 years old.

Edison was diagnosed with diabetes in his lifetime. He made an effort to control and maintain his disease with a healthy lifestyle. Edison did not drink and he did not eat meat.

Ty Cobb
Ty Cobb was born Tyrus Raymond Cobb in 1886. He was from Narrows, Georgia. Cobb is an all-star baseball icon. He was dubbed one of the best baseball stars in American history. His nickname was “The Georgia Peach”. Even though Cobb had type 1 diabetes, he played for the Detroit Tigers and the Philadelphia Athletics. He batted .320 or more for 23 consecutive seasons. Cobbs broke several all time records as well. As of 2007, there are still records that have been unbeatable. These include highest career batting average and most career batting titles. His style is still impressive to this day. Various other baseball players have tried time and time again to beat the unbeatable. In 1939, Cobb was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Ty Cobbs died in 1961 from cancer, complications of diabetes as well as heart disease. He was 75 years old.

Winnie Mandela
Winnie Mandela was born Nomzamo Winifred Zanyiwe Madikizela in 1936. She is a popular figure in her native Brizana, South Africa. Even though, it was difficult for a black woman to get an education during the apartheid, she accomplished his goal. Mandela received a degree in social work as well as a bachelor’s degree in international relations. She was forced to live for years on an island; she struggled with diabetes while in that state of isolation. Mandela was only allowed to return to visit her husband in prison. Andrew Lloyd Webber was born in 1948 from his native home town of London, England. He is a world famous musical composer. Lloyd Webber is most known for his musical genius through stage work. These include “Cats”, “Evita” and “The Phantom of the Opera”. He has obtained several awards for his performances including Academy Award, Tony Awards and a Grammy. The list of achievements is unlimited. Andrew Lloyd Webber is still composing at 60 years old.

When a young teen, Lloyd Webber did not let his friends know that he had diabetes. They in turn shared with him news articles that made mention of diabetes.

Spencer Tracy
Spencer Tracy entered the world in 1900 from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was a brilliant stage and screen actor. In his career, he achieved several awards and nominations. Tracy appeared in over 70 films in his career and won two Academy awards. He was nominated for 9 Academy Awards as well. Tracy is remembered from such films as “Goldie”, “It’s a Small World”, “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” and “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”. Spencer Tracy died in 1967 of a heart attack. He was 67 years old.

Tracy has had various health problems through his life including diabetes. Nevertheless, he was always supporting other actors and actresses with their illnesses. Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn stayed at the bedside of the dying Humphrey Bogart.

Cynthia Ice
Cynthia Ice is the designer and creator of Lotus software. She discovered the need for better software, a program that could better “read” the material on very dynamic websites. This program assists disabled people to search the web more efficiently and helps them purchase items that they need. Some people have a hard time leaving the home and finding products they need to survive. This is especially true for the blind and deaf.

Ice has lived with diabetes for over 20 years. She became blind from the disease. With growing problems and concerns trying to shop with her disability, she created a program to assist others with the internet.

Waylon Jennings
Waylon Jennings was born in 1937 from Littlefield, Texas. He is an icon in the American country music industry. Jennings had a distinctive voice that everyone recognized. In his early career, he played bass for Buddy Holly. When the plane crashed that took several talented musicians Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Richie Valens, Jennings was booked on that plane ride. However, at the last minute, he gave his seat to The Big Bopper. Jennings may be remembered mostly for his work on the “Dukes of Hazard”. He was the voice of the announcer as well as sung the theme song. Jennings had several hit songs including “MacAuthur Park”, “Delia’s Gone” and “Just to Satisfy You”. Among his achievements, he has won various awards, including “Lifetime Achievement Award”, “Male Vocalist of the Year” and “Album of the Year”. Jennings was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001 and inducted to Hollywood’s Rockwall in 2006. Waylon Jennings died in 2002 from diabetes complications. He was 65 years old.

Jennings had several health problems through his life, as well as a cocaine addiction. He became sober in 1984, but other issues became apparent. Scott died in 1999 of an abdominal aneurysm. He was 72 years old.

Gary Hall
Gary Hall Jr. was born in 1974 from Cincinnati, Ohio. He is an Olympic swimmer that has competed and won several medals. Hall has competed in the last three Olympic swimming competitions. He has won a total of 10 medals for his efforts. His family is accomplished in the Olympics as well. Several members of the family have won medals throughout the years. Hall has various American honors including the Humanitarian Award in 2004. Gary Hall Jr. is 34 years old.

While in the mist of competing, he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Even though, he needed some time to sort out this disease, Hall returned to compete again. His diabetes did not stop him from the 2000 Olympic Games and he broke an American record as well. Hall speaks out to young people faced with diabetes and allows them to know that their goals can be accomplished also.

Jerry Garcia
Jerry Garcia is most famous for his works with the Grateful Dead. He was an American music icon. Born Jerome John Garcia in 1942 from San Francisco, California, he took the world by storm. His band was recording and performing their songs for over three decades. Garcia is remembered for his works that include “I’ll Take a Melody”, “The Wheel” and “Might as Well”. His large base of fans called themselves “Deadheads.” Jerry Garcia rocked right up until the end; he died in 1995 of a heart attack. He was only 48 years old.

Garcia has had several health problems throughout his life. His weight and the drugs he used caused various issues. In 1986, Garcia fell into a diabetic coma. He did not awake until 5 days later. The coma left Garcia having to relearn more of the basic tasks during the day, including playing the guitar. Garcia shared with his fans some of his efforts to control his diabetes. In 1991, he hired a personal trainer. Even with the proper methods of controlling his health, he succumbed to a heart attack while he was at a rehab center for his heroin addiction.

Mary Tyler Moore
Mary Tyler Moore has been an icon in the television world as well as a spokeswoman for diabetes. She was born in 1936, a native of Brooklyn, New York. Moore is most famous for her roles in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” as well as “The Dick Van Dyke Show”. She began her career at the tender age of 17. Moore got her start on television commercials that were played during the most popular sitcoms at the time. She has been in film as well as stage performances.
